A basic guide to selecting the most important keyword for your niche…

First and foremost, we must understand the most important concept and the best practice in SEO.

Optimize one web page for only one keyword on your website.

Sure, a web page can be optimized to target more than one keywords.  However, only one keyword will be given the prime position in terms of SEO in its URL, title tag, header tag aka h1, and description meta tag.

The most-valuable keyword for your web page is called, “primary keyword”. And, others keywords being used on the page are known as the, “secondary keywords”.

For example, I am an SEO and live in Tucson, AZ so my primary keyword for my service page is “Tucson SEO”. Similarly, since I offer web design service too, the page for it is optimized for “Tucson Web Design”. So, if you are a dentist, attorney, real estate agent, or sell a product like used cars or trucks, your primary keyword will be the name of the city in which your business is located followed by your niche, i.e. a dentist who has her practice in Tucson should optimize her home or services page with her primary keyword of Tucson Dentist.

Now I will discuss how you may optimally map your primary keyword to your website…

1. Optimizing a one-page website

If your website content is published only on your home page, which presents your offer and prompts users to take an action then the keyword mapping will be simple:

  • Select your primary keyword to optimize the home page of your site.  

  • Choose 1-2 additional keywords as secondary keywords for your home page.

  • Select any remaining keywords to additional pages such as the About page or Services page.

Example of A Single Page Web Site:

Home page primary keyword:  “Tucson SEO”

Home page secondary keyword:  “Expert Search Engine Optimization”, “Tucson SEO Services”

Keyword for About page:  “Tucson SEO Company”


2) Optimizing a one-page website with a blog

Websites with a blog have additional advantages of leveraging keywords.  The most important one is the opportunity of targeting multiple long-tail keywords that can help you target highly qualified traffic.

Your keyword mapping strategy should look something like the following:

  • The home page and About page should be the same as discussed in #1.

  • For each blog page, select secondary keywords to optimize.

The same rule will apply to your blog pages also, you may focus on just one primary keyword or include additional secondary keywords.

The more the blog posts, the more the opportunity to optimize for hundreds of keywords and their  variations!

3) Optimize a multi-page website

A multi-page website the opportunity to divide your keyword mapping strategy differently, and effectively.

A multi-page business website means that there are multiple products or services.  This may also mean that there are multiple target consumer segments.

Make your web pages effective by clearly targeting each customer segment with all of your content.  

Your keyword mapping strategy should look something like:

  • Home Page:  Select your primary KW your business offering here. Create separate landing pages for each additional service or product that you offer then select the most high-value KW that focuses specifically on that consumer segment.

  • If you have blog: Use same method as described in #2.
